Instructions

    • 1

Place the crate near your bed so you can see and hear your puppy during the night. Make the crate cozy with washable bedding. Consider putting a worn shirt or used towel in the crate as well. Your scent will comfort your puppy.

    • 2

Withhold your pug's water an hour or so before bedtime to decrease the likelihood of an accident. Take your puppy outside for a potty break immediately before putting it in the crate for the night.

    • 3

Ignore fussing and whining when your puppy is initially placed in the crate. If you need to remove the puppy for any reason, wait for a break in the whining. Letting your pug out of the crate while it whines will reinforce the behavior. However, a young puppy will need at least one potty break during the night. Also take it out for a bathroom break as soon as it wakes up.

    • 4

Use the daylight hours to teach your pug that its crate is a positive place. Feed your puppy in the crate, put treats in the crate and never use the crate for punishment.
