How to Build Unique Boxes

How to Build Unique Boxes thumbnail
Take a plain box and make it uniquely yours.

A box can be customized in an endless number of ways. If you want to create a unique box, you only need to use your imagination. The structure of the box can be altered, such as by adding trim molding to the lid or around the base. The box can be finished with paint, stain or veneer. You can wood burn a design into the box or you can decorate it with items that will hold meaning for the person who will use the box.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut trim molding with a miter saw to fit the top of the box or around the bottom of the box. Sand the cut edges and test fit the pieces in place to make sure they are correctly cut. Apply wood glue to hold the pieces in place and then hammer in finishing nails to hold the molding in place. Wait until the glue dries, sand any remaining rough spots and finish the box as desired.

    • 2

Paint or stain the box to customize your decor. Paint is better for poor wood quality as it hides flaws better than stain. Experiment by mixing a painted top with stained sides or mix the colors of paint used. Use a stain or paint that matches the other wood in the room where you will place the box.

    • 3

Apply a wood veneer to a plywood box to enhance the appearance without the cost of using solid wood. Glue the veneer in place according to the instructions that come with the veneer kit.

    • 4

Stencil a pattern onto the box with paint or trace a stencil shape onto the box and then wood burn the pattern into the box. Paint the stenciled or wood-burned section a different color than the rest of the box to create contrast.

    • 5

Glue decorated paper, photos or other paper mementos to the box with a paint brush dipped in Mod Podge. When the adhesive dries, coat the box with another layer of Mod Podge to seal it or coat it with another kind of shellac that provides the finish you want.
