The range is often the heart of a kitchen, and many meals depend on it, whether cooking on the stove top or in the oven. This is why the range must be measured to fit in the kitchen design. If you're relocating the stove, renovating the whole kitchen or looking to purchase a new range, properly measuring a stove's size is the key to success. Electric and gas stove dimensions aren't always standard, so taking accurate measurements with a measuring tape will help you avoid the disappointment of a range that doesn't fit.

Average Kitchen Range Measurements

While there are no real standards for range sizes (many kitchen range measurements vary by an inch or two), there are averages you can use if you're starting with a basic design. Most models have a cooking surface that's 36 inches from the floor to match the standard kitchen counter height.

Although the average width of a kitchen range is around 30 inches and its average depth is 25 inches, the dimensions of an electric stove and a gas stove can vary. Additionally, some models will be nearly 30 inches in depth.

When checking the listed height of a range, keep in mind that some manufacturers include the control panel that may be positioned as a backsplash in the total height of the stove. Check the kitchen range measurements carefully to determine the dimensions the manufacturer is referring to.

Measuring Stove Size

When attempting to take your kitchen range measurements, it might be a bit confusing: The stove has a cooking surface and a control panel set in the back, as well as handles and knobs at the front. How do you go about measuring stove size? The key is to know which dimensions are important.

To measure depth_,_ measure from the back of the stove to the front of the oven door. Don't include knobs or handles in this measurement if you're simply checking whether the oven will line up with the depth of the counter and cabinets. You may want to know the depth of handles and knobs if you're putting the oven into a tight space, however.

To measure width, measure the distance between the right side and left side across a flat surface like the oven door. Be sure to measure down to at least 1/16 of an inch; a stove that's even a bit off won't fit into its space.

Other Stove Measurement Considerations

To measure height_,_ you'll want two measurements. First, measure from the base of the unit on the floor to the top of the cooking surface; this is the height you'll need to ensure the surface aligns with the countertop. Next, measure the height of any control panel or backsplash; you may want to know this for design purposes.

If you're measuring a space for a kitchen range, follow the same principles to get a measurement of the space. These will be the electric or gas stove dimensions you'll need to match when choosing a new range. Most manufacturers list the kitchen range measurements on the tag and online, so you should be able to match stove size to the space you have.

Alternatively, if you have the dimensions of a model of range you've chosen, these are the dimensions you'll need to build into your kitchen redesign. Be sure to include these kitchen range measurements in the design so everything will fit properly when complete.
