How to Make a Scary Cat Costume
Most cats aren't scary. Americans look at cats as house pets with individualistic natures. Most cat costumes, are not particularly scary. However, some of the more sinister elements of the cat's nature could be channeled into a very scary cat costume. In order to communicate the full effect of a scary cat, the person wearing the scary costume would have to interpret the role.

1
Think about the kind of cat that you want to be. Cats come in many shapes, colors and patterns. However, given the lore about black cats, a black cat is likely to yield the scariest costume.

2
Use clothes you already have to put together a lot of elements of your black cat costume. If you have fairly tight black pants and a long-sleeved black top, you can use these as the basis of your costume. You also can use a black skirt of any length. If your skirt is short, consider black tights or leggings underneath.

3
Wear the highest black heels that you have if you are female. If you don't own black heels, you can find them in any shoe store and also at many costume stores. Black spike heels express edge and individuality: two characteristics that cats possess in abundance. If you are male, a pair of black or mostly-black sneakers will do.

4
Visit costume stores to purchase a headband with cat ears on it and a fake cat tail. Put the headband on your head and pin the tail to your shirt around your lower back.
-
5
Make your cat costume scary with makeup and scary accessories. Use makeup, which you can buy at any drugstore or costume store, to paint your face. Consider painting your face extremely pale and making your eyes thick and black-rimmed.
-
6
Use red makeup or red paint to create blood droplets around your mouth and down the rest of your face. Cats hunt other animals and bugs and often eat them. Thus, the blood is scary and realistic at the same time.
-
7
Buy a pair of fake fangs and wear those over your front teeth. If you look in a cat's mouth, you will see teeth on either side that resemble fangs.
-
8
Imitate the behavior of cats to give your costume an extra flourish. Cats whine and hiss and fight each other. Cats also have sharp claws. You can hiss and whine at people and bare your nails without actually appearing to threaten anyone.

Tips & Warnings
Don't try to scare young children. You can prepare a lot of this costume at home from things that you have in your wardrobe. What remains to buy after your sift through your own clothes will cost you very little.
If you are going to attempt to be scary -- especially on Halloween -- be prepared for little kids to be frightened and for parents who might complain that your costume is too scary.
