How to Make a Large Screen for Screen Printing
Screen printing, also referred to as silk screen printing, is a process that involves using a screen to imprint a stencil design on to materials such as fabric or paper. The size of the screen can be determined by the size of the material or objects that are printed on as well as the size of the design stencil. A large screen can be made using a large frame for the silk screen.

1
Determine the size of your screen and use your measuring tape to measure the length of the stretcher bar for the size of screen you need.
-
2
Buy four bars; two for the height and two for the width of the screen. Purchase stretcher bars with a length and width that is at least 6 inches larger than the size of the design you are working on.
-
-
3
Slide the corners of the stretcher bars into place to make the frame for the screen. Hammer it into place if necessary to ensure the bars are properly aligned.
-
4
Measure the size of the fabric for your screen. Cut the fabric and leave some extra inches in the length and width of the fabric so that it is a bit bigger than the frame.
-
5
Place the fabric over the frame and pull it tightly and evenly across the frame to staple the edges. Space the staples 1 inch apart around the frame.
-
6
Staple the fabric down first at the center of the frame and pull it firmly and staple it to the corners of the frame and in-between until all four sides are completely attached to the frame. Keep the fabric taut during this process.
-
7
Cut off any excess fabric around the frame.
-
8
Secure the fabric by covering the four-sided border where the staples attach the cloth to the frame with duct tape.

Tips & Warnings
Choose the fabric for the screen based on the type of material and ink you intend to use for printing. A polyester mesh fabric is suitable for most silk screen printing. Typically fabrics with a low mesh count allow more ink to pass through the screen while fabrics with a high mesh count allow less ink to seep through, creating a sharper print.
