How to Fix Torn Roof Shingles
The upside to asphalt shingles on the roof is the easy installation along with exceptional waterproofing that comes with proper installation. The downside is that high winds, tree limbs and many other objects can damage the shingles. Repairing a torn shingle on the roof is a simple matter of removing the damaged shingle or shingles and replacing them. Basic tools, including a pry bar, hammer and utility knife, are all that you need to effect a proper repair. Does this Spark an idea?

Lift the lower edge of the shingle above the damaged or torn shingle.

Pry up the nails with a pry bar and pull the shingle out. The nails are hammered into place just above the black tar line right above the dull gray tabs. Remove the whole shingle.

Slide a new shingle into place making sure the bottom edge of the shingle is level with the shingles to the left and right. Cut the shingle with a utility knife to the proper size if the original shingle was a partial piece.

Hammer two nails per tab just above the black tar line on the new shingle. Hold up the lower edge of the shingle above the replacement one. Do not hammer directly onto the upper shingle to avoid damaging that one.

Tips & Warnings
Small tears or holes can be patched without replacing the shingle by using roofing cement. Apply the cement with a simple putty knife directly into the crack or hole.
