How to Become a Teacher Assistant in Houston


The Houston Independent School District employs teacher assistants to aid teachers in the classroom and also to serve as tutors and translators. Teacher assistants or paraprofessionals in Texas must meet highly qualified mandates set forth by the federal government as part of the No Child Left Behind law.

Meet minimum qualifications. Teacher assistants or paraprofessionals must have completed at least 48 college credit hours or an associate's degree.

Complete the 21st Century Learning Paraprofessional Series.

Pass the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) test with a score of at least 230 on the reading and math section and a minimum score of 220 on the writing section.

Search for jobs at the Houston Independent School District's job site. When searching, make sure to check the box that limits your search only to those jobs in the instructional support category.

Apply online for teaching assistant jobs.

Follow up with school administrators within a week or two of completing the online application.
