Custom shift knobs allow you to further personalize your vehicle.

There are several reasons why you may need to remove the stitched shifter knob on your vehicle. Whether your current shifter knob has excessive wear or you simply want to replace it with a custom shift knob for aesthetic reasons, removal is a generic procedure across most vehicles. Before you attempt to remove the stitched shifter knob on your car or truck, have a replacement shift knob designed to fit your vehicle ready -- it's not possible to drive the vehicle without a shifter.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the vehicle on a flat level surface and shut off the engine. Engage the emergency brake and put the vehicle in "Neutral." Neutral is in the center of the gearbox.

    • 2

Grasp the plastic piece directly below the shift knob or top of the shift boot and slide it down, exposing the shift lever and bottom of the shift knob. Some models require that you pinch the sides of the plastic clip to disengage the clip.

    • 3

Remove any retention screws at the base of the shift knob. These screws often require an Allen wrench. Note that not all vehicles have retention screws.

    • 4

Grab the shift knob with your right hand and twist counterclockwise to unscrew it from the shift lever.
