Troubleshooting a Technics SL-235 Turntable

Regular turntable maintenance will ensure your record player keeps spinning your favorite albums.

Even as digital music players advance in complexity and audio quality, traditional turntables are seen as a way to connect with the raw sound and low-fidelity of vinyl records. The Technics SL-235 turntable, which was released in 1978, plays 7-inch singles and 12-inch LP's. It used a rubber belt that was connected to the drive to turn the platter that records sit on. These old turntables are prone to issues due to their age, but simple tweaks can keep your Technics SL-235 playing like new.

Check the turntable's needle for damage and wear. This will often cause uneven playback and jumping during songs. Locate a replacement needle online if yours is worn down. Follow the included instructions to install the needle. Plug your turntable in and test it to see if this helps.

Play a couple of different albums on your turntable and listen for uneven playback speeds during songs that might indicate a worn or stretched drive belt. Purchase a replacement drive belt for your SL-235. Carefully remove the record platter and dust cover, exposing the drive belt. Simply lift the old one off and replace it with the new drive belt. Replace the dust cover and record platter.

Check your turntable's electrical connections for issues if it will not power on. Examine the cable for signs of damage or gashes that might indicate a faulty cord. Take the turntable to an electrician if the cord is damaged, or if you cannot find signs of damage but the unit still will not function.

Find a reputable record player technician in your area if you cannot locate the source of the problem. Do not attempt major turntable repairs yourself as you may wind up causing further harm to the turntable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always unplug your turntable from its power source prior to installing new parts or attempting repairs.
