How to Attach Cake Pillars
Wedding cakes typically consist of several layers stacked on top of each other. The bottom tier is the largest and the cakes get gradually smaller toward the top. This multi-tiered effect makes an elegant look and lets you serve different types of cake at the wedding. Tier assembly requires careful consideration to make sure the cakes are centered and level. You can stack the tiers directly on top of each other without worrying about the cake falling. Others prefer to stack the cake on well-balanced pillars to give space between each layer. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Center the bottom, largest tier of the cake on a base plate, then frost and decorate it. You should frost and decorate each layer before assembling the tiers, but you can add extra detail after assembly.
-
2
Center the separator place for the next tier on the bottom cake and push in gently to mark the spaces for your pillars. The separator plates have feet on the bottom that mount on the pillars; remove the feet after you make the marks.

3
Pipe icing in a zigzag pattern onto the separator plate for the second tier with a parchment bag and cake icing, then center the cake tier onto the plate. The icing serves as glue to hold the cake on the plate.
-
4
Push the pillars into the bottom tier at the indicated marks and push them straight down until they touch the cake base.
-
5
Put the feet of the separator place for the second tier into the openings on each pillar.
-
6
Position the second tier centered on the pillars. Support the cake until you are sure the pillars are stable.
-
7
Repeat the process with the additional cake tiers. You will need to do this one more time for a three-tiered cake.
-
8
Decorate the cake with additional icing, flowers, beads or any item of your choice. You can also touch up any sections of frosting.

Tips & Warnings
The separator plates should be the same size or only slightly larger than the cake tier.
Conceal the separator plate by piping frosting around the base of each tier.
Transport the cake in separate tiers and attach the cake pillars at the reception so it doesn't fall over in transport.
