How to Make Canvas Floor Coverings
Canvas floor coverings are a traditional form of decorative floor treatment. They were popular in the 18th century, although people have used them throughout history. They are a durable option for covering a floor with an artistic design. You can use a decorated canvas to cover any hard floor treatment including hardwood, tile and concrete. Things You'll Need
- Canvas
- Work surface
- Artist's gesso
- Paintbrush
- Acrylic art paints
- Art paintbrushes, various sizes
- Polyurethane
- Poly brush

Place the canvas on a work surface. Paint both sides of the canvas with artist's gesso to create a clean white surface on which to paint. Allow the gesso to dry at least four hours between painting the first side and second side. Allow the gesso to dry at least 24 hours before continuing.

Paint a design onto one side of the canvas using acrylic paints and art paintbrushes. Once you are satisfied with the overall design, allow the paint to dry for at least 72 hours.

Apply two coats of polyurethane over the top of the painted design to seal it. Allow the polyurethane to dry at least four hours between coats or as directed on the specific sealant container.

Tips & Warnings
For non-standard sized rooms, cut the canvas to size and create a folded over hem on the bottom side. Adhere the folded side using contact cement.
Apply the gesso, paint and polyurethane sealer in a well-ventilated area.
