How to Split a Brownie Troop
Brownie Girl Scouts are girls in first through third grades. The Girl Scouts of America determines that the minimum troop size is five girls, while the maximum size is 25 girls. The optimum troop size also depends on the size of the meeting place and the wishes of the Troop Leader. You must have two non-related adults, one of which must be female, for the first 20 girls, and one more adult for each froup of eight girls above that amount. If the troop gets too large, you may need to split it up into two smaller troops.

1
Find the correct number of leaders to take over the second troop that will be created when you split the larger troop. Ideally, one of these leaders will be someone that has already been a co-leader for the current large troop.
-
2
Explain to the girls that you will be dividing the troop. Encourage them to be upbeat and ensure them they will still participate in Brownies with each other when the troops complete activities together.
-
-
3
Separate the group into two diverse groups. Do not allow the girls to pick the troops, as this encourages cliques. Be careful to consider the social dynamics of the group so every girl has at least one friend in her new troop. You need to ensure they do not feel isolated from all their friends in the new troop as feelings of isolation may make girls drop out of Brownies.
-
4
Combine the troop meetings for the first couple weeks. This will ensure the girls will get to know their new leaders in a comfortable atmosphere.
-
5
Make plans for at least one joint venture. Do this before the girls split into two troops. This will put them more at ease with the change.

Tips & Warnings
If you are splitting up a troop before any meetings have taken place, talk to the teachers at school to determine if there are certain girls who should not be placed together. Avoiding personality conflicts from the start makes the meetings run more smoothly.
