How to Store Embroidery Floss

Embroidery floss can be a nuisance if you do not store it correctly. The threads can get all tangled up by themselves or tangled into another color of floss. This is especially true if you are working on a large cross stitch project that uses many different colors of thread. You can use some items you already have around the house and re-purpose them for storing your embroidery floss. You could buy fancy tools that help you store your thread, or you can make something at home and it will cost you nothing.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect some cardboard items from around your home. Use the cardboard back of a full notebook or food boxes from your pantry. Save a shoebox as well.

    • 2

Cut the boxes except for the shoebox open so that they lay flat. Measure and mark out strips that measure 1 1/2 inches wide. Leave four or five of the strips the length of the shoebox, but cut the remaining strips into 1 1/2-inch squares.

    • 3

Take your shoebox and measure the bottom of it every 2 inches. Put a bead of glue along the 2-inch measurement and place a strip, on its side so that it stands up, in the glue. Hold it until the glue sets or place items on either side of the strip to hold it while the glue dries.

    • 4

Continue to glue a standing-up strip at each 2-inch mark in your shoebox.

    • 5

Cut some notches in each of the 1 1/2-inch squares. One one side of the square, mark into the square 1/4 inch from each corner and cut into the square 1/4 inch, giving you two slits. Do the same for the opposite side of the square, to give you two slits on that side too. Cut out the cardboard in between the slits on both sides of the square, leaving you with something that looks like an "H."

    • 6

Wrap the embroidery thread around the cardboard, using the cut-out sections to help it stay on the card. Use the side of the card to write the number of the floss. Write the brand of floss on the other side if desired.

    • 7

Arrange your cards of floss in number order. Place them in between the spacers in the shoebox to store them neatly and organized.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use more than one shoebox for storing your embroidery floss. Use different shoeboxes for different brands of floss to keep you from getting confused when working on your projects.

  • When you store your embroidery floss in numerical order you can easily see which colors coordinate with each other when you want to create your own project. You can also see what colors you have and what colors you need before making any purchases.
