Easy Sew Pillow Case Instructions

If you want to sew your own bedding, whether it be a comforter, quilt, duvet cover or a bedspread, you may also want to make some pillow cases, so that your bedding matches or coordinates. Pillow cases are one of the easiest items to sew. You only have to sew a few straight seams. Use your own pillow as a guide for how much fabric to cut, as pillows come in all sizes and styles, making it difficult to come up with a specific measured pattern.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the fabric in half with the right sides together, so that the selvage edges (the uncut edges) line up together. Make sure all the edges of your fabric meet up perfectly, for best results. Trim any edges that are not perfectly square.

    • 2

Place your pillow on top of the folded fabric, leaving 1 inch of fabric at the bottom and 2 inches of fabric at the fold.

    • 3

Cut the fabric around the pillow, leaving 2 inches of fabric on the side across from the fold and 8 inches at the top of the pillow.

    • 4

Remove the pillow and set it aside. Open up the pillow case so you can work on the top edge.

    • 5

Fold down the top edge of the pillow case 5 inches to give you that doubled-over edge on store-bought pillow cases, which will be at the opening. Fold under the raw edge 1/2 inch to hide it. Use pins to hold the fabric in place.

    • 6

Sew straight across the entire top of the pillow case to secure the top edge. Remove the pins as you sew.

    • 7

Fold the pillow case in half again, with the right sides together, matching up the edges along the top of the pillow case. Use pins to hold the fabric in place.

    • 8

Start at the top of the pillow case and sew down the side and across the bottom. Back-stitch at the beginning and the end to secure the stitches.

    • 9

Turn the pillow case right-side out. Poke your fingers into the corners of the pillow case if necessary, to make the corners nice and square.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you like more than one pillow on your bed, make one pillow case with a print fabric and another one with a coordinating solid.

  • Cut out more than one pillow case at a time by layering the fabric. This helps you save time if you are making multiple pillow cases.
