How to Tie Slide Knots in Leather Cording thumbnail
A slide knot makes an easy and inexpensive adjustable knot closure for necklaces.

Leather cord is an economical and fashionable stringing material for necklaces. Available in several colors and gauges, it lends texture and organic appeal to jewelry. Hang a pendant or a series of multicolor, large-holed beads on the cord to make a one-of-a-kind piece. For a casual look, finish your necklace with a slide knot, also known as a slip knot. Easy to master, the adjustable knot closure allows you to wear the necklace in different ways. Depending on the length of leather cord used, it works as a long, mid-length and choker necklace.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the leather cord, allowing enough length to fit comfortably over your head. Add eight inches. Design your necklace by lining up the beads in the order you want them in the necklace, with the pendant in the center. Slide the beads and pendant onto the leather cord and allow them to sit in the center. Make sure both the leather cord ends are the same length.

    • 2

Make an overhand knot on the right-hand leather cord by taking the cord end and making a loop; take the cord end and slide it under and through the hole of the loop, then pull tight. Make an overhand knot on the left-hand leather cord. Tighten at the tips of the right and left-hand sides of the leather cord.

    • 3

Take the right-hand leather cord and make an overhand knot around the left-hand leather cord. Go through the loop twice. Slide your new knot down to the original overhand knot at the tip of the right-hand leather cord.

    • 4

Take the left-hand leather cord and make an overhand knot around the right-hand leather cord. Go through the loop twice. Slide your new knot down to the original overhand knot at the tip of the left-hand leather cord.

Check your necklace for adjustability by pulling on the knots or the leather cord.
