Becoming a Substitute Teacher in Minnesota
If you are interested in picking up some part-time work in education in Minnesota, you may be able to do substitute teaching. If you plan on being a substitute teacher for no more than 14 days total, you are not required to be licensed in the state. However, if you want to substitute-teach for more than 14 days, you need to be licensed. Once you are licensed, you can be a substitute teacher anywhere in the state.

Earn a bachelor's degree in the subject you want to teach as a substitute. So you're not limited in the classes where you can substitute, earn a bachelor's in education, which allows you to substitute in any class.

Go to the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations website (see Resources) to register for the MTLE test, which you need to take and pass. Preparation materials to help you study for the test are available on the site.

Call the state Department of Education at 651-582-8691 to request a fingerprint card.

Visit a local law enforcement agency to complete the fingerprint card. The cost varies by location but ranges between $15 and $25, as of 2010.

Apply for your license by accessing the licensing application from the Minnesota Department of Education website (see Resources). As of 2010, the initial licensing fee is $90.65.

Submit your fingerprint card and school transcripts to Educator Licensing, Minnesota Department of Education, 1500 Highway 36 West, Roseville, MN, 55113-4266. Once you get your license in return mail, apply at your local school district to be a substitute teacher.
