How to Hook Up a Winch Strap to Boat Trailer

In order to hook up a winch strap to a boat trailer, the trailer must be equipped with a mounted winch, because the strap hooks to the trailer through the winch mechanism. Most winches come with the strap already installed, but if yours doesn't or you need to replace the winch strap on the boat trailer due to normal wear and tear or damage, the installation process is fairly straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the end of the winch strap with the loop on it into the winch and feed it under the crossbolt.

    • 2

Slide the strap anchor that came with the winch into the loop at the end of the winch strap.

    • 3

Pull the hook end of the winch strap tight and away from the winch to snug up the loop end of the strap with the crossbolt in the winch.

    • 4

Wrap the winch strap around the winch mechanism for three full rotations by hand. Always make sure there is a minimum of three complete wraps of the winch strap around the winch when in use.

    • 5

Wind up the rest of the strap on the winch using the crank or the electric motor, if equipped.

Tips & Warnings

  • Measure the inside width of your winch to make sure you have the correct strap size before installation.

  • Follow all safety precautions and procedures listed in the owner's manual.
