How to Clean the Trackball on a BlackBerry 8130

BlackBerry's Pearl series of smartphones, of which the 8130 3G is a member, was released in 2007 to improve the functionality of the earlier 8100 Pearl series models. Since then, a lot of dirt may have accumulated in the cracks around the edges of your 8130 trackball. Luckily, the trackball was built to be conveniently removed and replaced, and removing it to give the trackball a quick cleaning may be a solution to replacing it at all.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the power button on your BlackBerry to turn off the device. Wedge your jeweler's flat-head screwdriver into the lip around the edge of the 8130's silver trackball mount, while simultaneously prying the mount in an upward direction. Be gentle.

    • 2

Work the screwdriver around the circumference of the silver mount, prying upward as you go.

    • 3

Set the mount on your cloth, slide your screwdriver into the mount well and the trackball should attach to it. Set the trackball on the cloth.

    • 4

Use the cloth to gently clean any grit or residue from the parts.

    • 5

Spray a few blasts of compressed air into the trackball compartment and onto the trackball parts.

    • 6

Use the screwdriver to pick up the trackball and place it back into its center position. Arrange the mount around the trackball and push it back down until it is fully seated in place.

    • 7

Turn on your phone and test the clean trackball.
