Caramel apples are a seasonal treat, eaten most often around Halloween when indulgent candy is rampant. The candy coating of a caramel apple holds up well for about a week after the apple is made. Refrigeration is recommended during this time to keep the coating hard, although apples can also be stored at room temperature. An air-tight container is not recommended, because the lack of air circulation can cause the candy shell to soften. Does this Spark an idea?

      Arrange the caramel apples on a cookie sheet or in the bottom half of a plastic container. Apples should be stored with the stick pointing up to preserve the integrity of the caramel candy.

      Cover the apples with foil or plastic wrap. Place the wrap over the entire supply of apples, and tuck it under the sides of the cookie sheet. This action will create a tent over the entire batch of apples. If you are using a plastic container, rest the top on the container, but do not seal it. Leave the lid on loosely so the container is not air-tight.

      Place the apples in the refrigerator, or leave them sitting at room temperature. In either case, the apples can be stored for no more than one week.

      Remove a candy apple before it is to be served. Allow the apple to stand for 30 to 45 minutes until it is eaten. The standing time will allow the apple's coating to become flexible enough to not crack when it is cut apart.

      Wrap all unfinished cut portions in foil or plastic wrap, and return them to the refrigerator. Cut portions should be eaten within one day of being returned to the fridge.
