Steps to Change My Name After a Divorce thumbnail
Changing your name after a divorce requires a lot of paperwork.

Changing your name after a divorce can be a hassle but is easier if you take it in small steps. It involves obtaining documents that verify the name change and starting from there. Changing your name on some of your more important documents first, like your driver's license or Social Security card, makes it easier to change your name on other documents. Following a series of steps will make the whole process easier.

Instructions

    • 1

File a "Petition for Name Change" with the court after the divorce if a name change wasn't part of the divorce ruling. This usually includes filling out an affidavit that explains why you want to change the name. Once the court approves your petition you can file an "Order for Name Change" at your county clerk's office.

    • 2

Obtain certified copies of your name change order or your divorce decree if it included a formal order for a name change. You can get certified copies of your divorce judgment from your lawyer or at the clerk of court's office. You can also get a certified copy of your name change order at the county clerk's office.

Apply for a new Social Security card. Bring the certified copies and a current photo I.D. to the Social Security office. Your Social Security number will remain the same; only your name will change. An I.D. with the your married name is acceptable.

Visit the Department of Motor Vehicles and apply for a new driver's license or I.D. card. Bring your new Social Security card, your old driver's license or I.D. card and the certified copies of your name change order.

    • 5

Inform your employer of your name change as well as your new marital status. Fill out new tax forms to reflect your name change and marital status and update your name with the payroll department so the new name will be on your checks. Have them print business cards with your new name and update your name on any company directories.

    • 6

Inform any remaining companies or organizations of your name change. This may include the post office, your bank, your creditors, utility providers and landlords. Some of these companies may require documentation, so wait until you have received your certified copies, new Social Security card or new driver's license to make these notifications.
