      Familiarize yourself with your oven's cooking features and functions. Read the manual for the oven. Most ovens have an automatic timer and adjustable heat settings. Get to know your oven, its features and how to operate them.

      Place the oven on a safe surface. If you put it on a countertop, be sure that it has enough room and the bottom of the oven does not extend over the counter space to avoid spills. Give the oven at least 8 inches of clearance space from the wall.

      Keep electric cords away from sinks or water. Do not allow electrical cords to dangle or rest underneath the oven. Band the cord with electrical tape to keep it from dangling and exposure to water, grease or spills.

      Select the right size cuts of meat for the size of your oven. Countertop rotisserie ovens cannot accommodate large foods such as a full-size turkey. If cuts are too large, the food can cook too fast, burn and, worst of all, cause grease splatters that can trigger an oven fire.

      Marinate and season foods to maximize flavor. Use herbs like rosemary and tarragon to season a chicken. Marinate red meats and lamb with teriyaki sauce or Worcestershire, salt, pepper and herbs. Refrigerate the foods after seasoning and marinating. The more time you allow them to marinate before cooking in the rotisserie oven, the more flavorful the meal will be.

      Resist the temptation to use a cooking bag or to cover meats and poultry in foil. Rotisserie ovens are compact in space and the heating element is close to the food. Aluminum foil or plastic can heat and cause a fire.

The USDA recommends safe eating of foods such as rotisserie chicken of three to four days.

      Monitor and supervise use. Never leave the oven unattended. Even though there are "set it and forget it" advertising claims, do not attempt to do so when operating a rotisserie oven. If your oven has a safety lock to prevent children from adjusting the oven, turn on this feature when you are cooking and children are around.

      Clean the drip pan after each use. Let the oven cool after cooking to avoid grease burns. Once the drippings have cooled off, dispose of them properly. Use a garbage bag or can to empty the grease once the temperature has cooled. Never pour hot grease into any type of plastic container or bag.
