How to Find the Value of a Cargo Trailer
Many variables go into determining the value of a cargo trailer, especially a used model. Looking up the value of a new trailer can be as simple as asking a dealer or searching the Internet for the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP), but calculating the value of a used trailer involves weighing several factors, such as the condition of the trailer, special amenities or upgrades, as well as the physical location of the trailer.

1
Knowing the make, model and year of your trailer is essential. It should be listed on the trailer's title or ownership papers. If not, a local trailer dealership might be helpful.
-
2
Determine what the trailer has been used to haul in the past. Different trailers may be used to haul different kinds of cargo, such as furniture, merchandise or livestock. The type and amount of cargo a trailer has carried affects the wear and tear the trailer has sustained and can affect its value.

3
Use an Internet website like NADA Guides or MSP Press to search for the value of a trailer. This website allows consumers to look up the value of new or used models, based on brand name, model, year and added features.
-
4
Subtract the amount of any known repairs or maintenance issues from the value obtained through Step 3. If you don't know whether the trailer needs repairs, take it to a repair shop for evaluation.
-
5
Factor the trailer's mileage into the value. While most cargo trailer's do not have odometers, the owner should have an idea of how many miles the trailer has traveled. The more miles, the lower the resale value.
-
6
Compare the values obtained through Steps 3 through 5 to online listings at websites like Horse Trailer World and ListATrailer.com. This will provide list price comparisons for similar trailers and help you determine if the relative value of your trailer. Additionally, ListATrailer.com allows you to browse listings based on location. This can be an important comparison tool, since location can affect trailer values.
-
7
Visit a dealer or appraiser for a final estimated value, or visit two for a second opinion. While the steps above will give you an idea of a cargo trailer's value, trying to determine a trailer's value on your own can be inaccurate. You can also contact industry organizations like the North American Trailer Dealers Association. This group is compiling a database of trailer values and might be able to provide a value estimate as well.
