How to Organize Your Tiny Clothes Closet

Adding storage can keep your small closet in order.

Your closet is the go-to space for storage in your home, but if it's particularly small, it can be a challenge to keep it organized. If you have a tiny closet for clothes storage, employing a few simple strategies can ensure that your closet is tidy and orderly, even if it is compact.

Things You'll Need

• Hangers with multiple hooks
• Storage bins
• Paper boxes
• Small bookshelf or free-standing shelves
• Permanent marker

Instructions

1. Take all clothing, shoes and accessories out of the closet.

2. Separate your clothes according to seasons.

3. Create another pile of clothes for items that you haven't worn in the last six months to a year.

4. Replace the hangers in the closet with longer hangers that can hold more than one garment. This reduces clutter and allows you to hang an entire outfit on one hanger.

5. Hang the clothes that are in the pile of the current season on the new hangers.

6. Arrange the clothes in the closet according to how often you wear them. For instance, work clothes should be closest to the closet door, while dressier clothing and formal wear is hung on the other side of the closet.

7. Place the clothing that is not in season in the storage bins that are size-appropriate for your closet.

8. Place the bins on the closet floor, stacked on top of one another to conserve space, and label them with a marker.

9. Use the paper boxes to hold your jewelry and clothing accessories. Place the boxes on top of the bins, or on a shelf in the closet.

10. Add a small bookshelf to the closet for holding additional items that you'll need access to often, such as books, bills or additional accessories. Place the bookshelf in the corner so that the closet won't look to crowded. If the closet is too small, install a shelf on the back of the door for additional storage.

11. Gather the clothes that you no longer wear and put them in a bag or box to give away to a friend, loved one or charity.
