When fabric is left moist for a period of time, mold may develop. Favorable conditions for mold to develop include the presence of water, oxygen, nutrients and warm temperatures. If mold is not properly removed, it will spread to other nearby fabrics and surfaces. Nylon is one such fabric that is often used to repel and shield against water. Nylon items may include umbrellas, tents and windbreakers. Because nylon is often used in wet conditions, mold may develop and should be treated as soon as possible to prevent damage to the fabric.

Step 3

Presoak the fabric in cold water.

Step 4

Wash the fabric in a mixture of warm water and liquid detergent. This should remove most if not all of the mold stain.

Step 5

Blot the stain with a soft cloth using a mild color safe bleach. Color safe means that the bleach will not fade or alter the color of the fabric. Use a lemon juice and salt solution for colored fabrics.

Step 6

Rinse fabric in cold water and launder as normal.

Tip

Test a small area of the fabric with the bleach and lemon juice and salt solution to ensure you don’t damage the material.
