How to Stop Roaches

Cockroaches prefer to live indoors, where there is plenty of food and water available. Getting rid of cockroaches and keeping infestations from getting worse takes a well thought-out action plan. Cockroaches are hard to get rid of because they can live under extreme conditions where other bugs can't and they reproduce quickly. Depending on the type of cockroach, they can produce up to 45 eggs weekly. Once the so called "nymphs" are born, they will be ready to reproduce in 36 days. Learn how to stop cockroaches to prevent a cockroach infestation.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic food-containers
  • Dehumidifier
  • Caulk
  • Duct tape
  • Cockroach spray
  • Cockroach bait
  • Keep you home clean. Vacuum your home often and prevent any food crumbs from lying around. Sweep underneath appliances and furniture because cockroaches often hide in places where you might not see them.

  • Seal all your food in plastic containers and place them in cabinets or in the fridge. Starve the cockroaches and make it impossible for them to get to any food which may result in them migrating to another location. Use a trashcan with a lid and remove your pet's food bowl at night as cockroaches are nocturnal and will roam the house at night.

  • Purchase a dehumidifier to get rid of any humidity as roaches thrive in damp areas. Cockroaches need water to survive, so dry the bathtub, sink and any other damp areas. Check pipes and faucets for any leakage.

  • Use caulk to seal up any cracks and crannies in your house or apartment that cockroaches might enter through or hide in.

  • Place pieces of duct tape around the house to act as roach traps. Lay the tape down with the sticky side up so that if a roach comes in contact with it, he'll stick to it.

  • Kill cockroaches by spraying them with cockroach spray or saturate their hiding places with the spray which will stay active up to four weeks, depending on the brand you use. Spray your home regularly even if you don't see any cockroaches.

  • Place cockroach bait in places where you suspect cockroaches. Let the cockroach eat from the "irresistible" bait and bring it back to the nest where he dies. The bait will then contaminate and kill off the remaining cockroaches.

  • Saturate the area around your house with bug spray to create a barrier and to kill the bugs that cross it. Spray near places where roaches can possibly enter the house.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't catch and release cockroaches outside because they may find their way back into the house again.
