How to Change the Brake Pads on a 1998 Honda CR-V
The 1998 Honda CR-V is equipped with front-wheel disc brakes. The disc brakes are composed of brake pads and rotors that work in conjunction to slow and eventually stop the vehicle during braking. If either of the components are found to be in disrepair you should replace them immediately. You can have the brake pads replaced professionally or you can do it yourself to save time and money.
Things You'll Need
- Brake fluid
- Brake grease
- Brake pads
- C-clamp
- Flat screwdriver

1
Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels with the tire iron or lug wrench. Lift the front of the CR-V with the jack and rest it on jack stands for support. Remove the lug nuts and take the front wheels off.
-
2
Remove the two caliper slide pins from the inside surface of the caliper with the 12 mm wrench. Lift the caliper from the wheel hub and pry the brake pads from its sides. Use a flat screwdriver for stuck pads. Open the brake fluid bleed valve with a 10 mm socket wrench. Place a drip pan beneath the caliper to capture any leaking fluid.

3
Place the C-clamp over the caliper piston and the back side of the caliper. The piston is the cylinder that extends from the inside of the caliper to force the brake pads against the rotor during braking. Squeeze the piston open with the C-clamp to allow for the thicker new brake pads. Remove the clamp once the piston is depressed within the side of the caliper, and close the bleed valve with the wrench.

4
Apply brake grease to the back sides of the new brake pads and slide them onto the sides of the caliper. Place the caliper back onto the rotors and screw in the slide pins. Place the wheel back onto the CR-V's wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts by hand.

5
Repeat steps 2 through 4 to change the pads on the Honda's other front wheel.
-
6
Lift the front of the vehicle with the jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the front tires to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron. Lift the hood and remove the master cylinder cap located on the right side of the Honda's engine. Place a funnel into the reservoir and fill the container with brake fluid. Remove the funnel and close the CR-V's hood.
