How to Install a CD Player in a 1999 GMC Suburban

Owners of the 1999 GMC Suburban can swap their factory installed stereo deck for an aftermarket CD player. Choose a CD player that meets your car audio needs and fits within your budget. You can choose to have the new CD player installed professionally or you can purchase the wiring harness adapter and GM antenna adapter and install the new CD player yourself.

      Pull the hood release lever on the driver's side of the Suburban. Move to the front of the vehicle and raise the hood. Loosen the bolt that holds the negative battery cable to the battery. Remove the cable from the battery and set it aside. Return to the inside of the vehicle.

      Grab the upper left corner of the dashboard and pull the dash panel from the dash. Reach behind the panel once it is relieved from the dash and pop the headlamp control switch from the panel.

      Work your hands around the main dash panel until it is completely detached from the dashboard. Pull down the two levers on the sides of the factory stereo to release the unit from the stereo bracket. Slide the unit from the stereo dock and disconnect the stereo wiring and antenna cable from the rear panel of the unit.

      Slide the aftermarket CD player's installation sleeve into the stereo dock. Pull the stereo wiring and antenna cable to the front of the dashboard. Fold the metal tabs of the sleeve outward to bind it within the dock.

      Plug the stereo wiring connectors into the wiring harness adapter leads. Connect the antenna cable lead to the GM antenna adapter. Plug the wiring harness adapter lead connectors into the appropriate outlets on the rear panel of the CD player. Insert the GM antenna adapter lead into the FM antenna input on the back of the new CD player.

      Slide the CD player into the installation sleeve until it snaps into place within the Suburban's stereo dock. Replace the main dashboard panel against the dash and press firmly around the perimeter to snap it back into place. Replace the headlamp control into the opening on the driver's side of the dash panel before pressing the left side of the panel back into place. Move back to the Suburban's battery.

      Place the negative battery cable clamp onto the negative battery terminal. Tighten the bolt on the clamp with the wrench and close the Suburban's hood.
