Instructions

  1. Central Air-Conditioning System

    • 1

Check your air filter at least every other month during the mild season and at least once a month during the high heat season. Some air-conditioning systems have two different air filters so be sure to inspect them both. Replace any filter that is dirty or clogged or wash a reusable air filter. Make sure that you get the exact size filter or cut down a multisize filter so that it fits snugly.

    • 2

Clean your air ducts and registers before the hot season sets in. Vacuum the register grilles or brush them with a soft brush. Unscrew the register grilles and vacuum inside the ducts. Use a flashlight to see if the ducts are clogged with dust. Place an attachment on your vacuum cleaner that allows you to insert it into the duct.

    • 3

Inspect the outside compressor unit closely. Unobstructed airflow into the compressor unit is vital for efficient operation of your air conditioning system. Remove any vines climbing up the exterior of the compressor. Prune back plants that obstruct air flow.

    • 4

Clean and straighten the coil fins on the compressor to remove dirt lodged in the fins. Use a soft brush to gently rub up and down on the coils. Mix water and a mild detergent to remove stubborn accumulations of dirt. Look for bent fins and use a tool called a fin comb to straighten out the fins.

    Window Air Conditioner

    • 5

Unplug the air conditioner and remove the front panel. Unfasten the retaining clips holding the air filter in place and remove the filter. Wash the filter under running water on a monthly basis during the hot season.

    • 6

Use a damp cloth to wipe the accumulation of dust from both sides of the grille and the louvers of the front panel. Remove greasy buildup by cleaning the panel with a mixture of water and mild detergent.

    • 7

Remove the air conditioner unit from the window and take off the wraparound housing. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to vacuum dirty condenser coil fins and evaporator fins.

    • 8

Use a multiheaded fin comb to straighten out the bent coil fins. Make sure the teeth of the comb fit smoothly between the fins. Slide the comb above a damaged section of fins and then slide it downward to straighten bent fins.

    • 9

Check the exterior of the unit while still fitted inside the window. Look for anything that could be obstructing airflow to the appliance. Things to look for include a bushes or trees that are too near the unit. Also make sure that the positioning of the window unit is efficiently located to take full advantage of airflow. Consider moving the unit to another window if it is located in a spot where air does not flow smoothly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear thick work gloves when cleaning and straightening evaporator coils and straightening fins to avoid cutting your fingers.

  • Turn off power to the unit before changing air filters or cleaning compressor evaporator coils.
