An audible at the line can result in a big play.

An audible play at the line of scrimmage is integral to success in football, even if the game is played on a computer on gaming console. Future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning is one quarterback who is renowned for his ability to introduce audibles after reading the opposition's defense. In the Madden NFL series of games, you too can call an audible. Once you get to the line, and see the opponent's defensive lineup, you may decide to switch up the play.

Instructions

      Select an offensive play in Madden NFL football.

      Look at the defensive alignment of your opposition once your offensive players get to the line of scrimmage. If it looks like a defense that would be problematic for the offensive play you plan to run, you'll need to call an audible.

      Press the "X" button and push right on the right analog stick. This button combination will audible to a standard passing play. Your receivers and running back will run forward and be ready to receive a pass.

      Press the "X" button and push down on the right analog stick. This combination audibles to a standard halfback running play, and should be used if you've previously set up for a passing play.

      Press "X" and up on the right analog stick. This combination sets up a deep pass audible. Your receivers will run long routes downfield looking for a long pass.

      Press "X" and left on the right analog stick. This combination sets up a play action pass. Your quarterback will fake a handoff to the running back, roll to the outside and then you'll be able to target a receiver for a pass.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with different audibles to get a feel for each. Audibles can be used when playing against the computer opponent, a live opponent or an opponent online.

  • It is helpful to be familiar with the appearances of various defensive alignments in order to know what kind of audible is appropriate to call. Learn what man coverage, blitz packages, cover two defense and prevent defenses look like.
