How to Get Your GED in Western Kentucky

How to Get Your GED in Western Kentucky thumbnail
A GED classroom-based program is just one way of studying for the GED exam.

The general equivalency diploma (GED) is recognized as the equivalent of a high school diploma. It is accepted by both colleges and employers. By passing the five tests that comprise the GED exam, an applicant will be eligible for a high school equivalency diploma, or GED. In western Kentucky, a student has many options to prepare for their GED. Kentucky offers free classroom-based programs through their adult education centers, as well as online and at-home GED training programs. Although in most cases you need to be 19 to take the GED test, there are exceptions which allow students from 16 to 18 to get their GED.

Instructions

    • 1

Check that the student meets the Kentucky residency requirements. She will need a government-issued ID with the Kentucky address listed.

    • 2

Check that the student meets Kentucky age requirements. He must either be 19 years of age, or 16 years of age if he is officially withdrawn from school for at least 90 days, or has received a waiver from the Superintendent of Schools. This waiver is given for students who need a GED for post-secondary education, medical reasons, family reasons or as a condition of employment. This waiver is on the Kentucky GED testing application. If he has withdrawn from school, he needs a proof of withdrawal on a school form or letterhead.

    • 3

Check if the student is eligible for an age exemption if she does not meet the general age eligibility requirements. If she is at least 16 years old and committed to a correctional facility or juvenile detention facility, in Job Corps, a ward of the state or enrolled in an Kentucky Department of Education (KDE)-approved GED program, she will be exempt from the general age requirement. If she qualifies for an exemption, the signature of the program's administrator or superintendent will be required on the Kentucky GED testing application.

    • 4

Check if the student is eligible for special test-taking accommodations for a disability. These disabilities can be physical/chronic health, attention-deficit/hyperactivity, learning/cognitive or emotional/mental health. If he has a disability, complete the appropriate form, which can be obtained at a Kentucky Adult Education Center. He must provide documentation of his disability and submit the forms to a GED examiner at the Kentucky Adult Education Center's GED office.

    • 5

Complete the GED testing application and take it to a Kentucky Adult Education Center. She can obtain this application from adult education providers, school districts, GED testing centers or Kentucky Adult Education Center's GED office.

    • 6

Complete the GED official practice test. He must pass this test in order for him to take the official GED test. If he fails this test, he will need to study the areas of the test he failed.

    • 7

Complete a GED training program or self-study GED learning material, if she did not pass the practice test. The Kentucky Adult Education Center offers free classes to prepare for the GED test. She can also take free online study courses through Kentucky Virtual Adult Education or study for the test with Kentucky Educational TV's GED Connection Program. After completing the program or at any time she feels ready, she can retake the practice test until she passes.

    • 8

Take the completed application with required signature if the applicant is between ages 16 and 18, and the certification from the practice testing facility to the Kentucky GED Testing Center. He will also need to bring the appropriate fee, which as of December 2010 was $55 for the complete battery of tests or $25 for each individual test, and a government-issued photo ID which lists the student's name, address, date of birth and signature. He must take the GED test within 6 months of submitting the application.

    • 9

Take the test. The Kentucky GED test consists of five sections: Language Arts-Writing, Language Art-Reading, Social Studies, Science and Mathematics. As of December 2010, a GED applicant needs a minimum average score of 450, with no test score less than 410. After taking the test, she will receive the results in the mail in approximately 15 working days. If she passed the test, a high school equivalency diploma or GED will be issued in her name.
