How to Needlepoint a House

Purchased needlepoint house patterns have preprinted designs on the needlepoint canvas. Custom houses are hand drawn onto the needlepoint fabric with a wate- soluble marker. Colored water-soluble markers are used to color the different areas of the house. A needlepoint stitch is used to cover the colored areas with the correct needlepoint yarn. The most common needlepoint stitch is a diagonal stitch called the continental stitch. The stitch creates diagonal lines on the front of the needlepoint canvas and straight lines on the back.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the needlepoint house kit. Tape around the edges of the needlepoint canvas with masking tape. This prevents the edges from fraying while working on the project.

    • 2

Start in the lower lefthand corner of the house. Thread a needle with the designated color. Do not put a knot in the end of the yarn. The stitch is worked over two rows of holes.

    • 3

Pull the yarn through the first hole leaving a 1 1/2-inch end on the back. Complete the stitch by putting the needle through the next hole to the upper right. Pull the thread to the back of the needlepoint fabric.

    • 4

Lay the end of the needlepoint yarn toward the right on a horizontal plane. Tie the end off by completing the next few stitches over the top of the yarn. Insert the needle in the hole directly beneath it's location. Complete a second diagonal stitch. Repeat the stitch until the row or color is finished. Change yarn colors as indicated by the pattern.

    • 5

Tie the end off from each length of yarn by turning the fabric over. Slide the needle under five stitches on the back of the canvas. Cut off the excess yarn.
