How to Remove the Fuel Pump on a 2002 Malibu
The 2002 Malibu was the fifth generation of the model produced by Chevrolet. The wheelbase on these models was slightly larger than previous model years. The engines in these vehicles are all gasoline powered, with the gasoline being fed to the engine from a fuel pump located in the gas tank. You can remove the fuel pump on a 2002 Malibu for servicing or if you need to change the fuel filter.

1
Relocate the 2002 Malibu to a spot where you can work on the vehicle. You will need plenty of room toward the rear of the Malibu in order to remove the fuel pump. Set the car in park. Turn off the engine.
-
2
Locate the fuse panel in the Malibu, which is located underneath the dashboard on the inside of the vehicle. On the inside of the panel there should be a diagram that will identify which fuse controls the fuel pump. Use the fuse puller included to remove this fuse.

3
Restart the Malibu. Run it until the engine dies. This will depressurize the fuel system.
-
4
Open the trunk. Remove the carpeting at the bottom of the trunk. You should be able to see two fuel lines going into the fuel pump.
-
5
Disconnect the fuel hose couplings on the fuel lines from the top of the pump.
-
6
Use the socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the fuel pump in place. Gently lift the fuel pump up and out of the tank.
