How to Make a Black & White Photo With One Object in Color With Paint Shop X2 thumbnail
The world is in color, but photos don't have to be.

One of the most interesting advertising effects consists of a black-and-white image containing a single color object. The colored object catches the attention of viewers and adds a focal point. Using this effect, you can create captivating images for your wallpaper or make your website stand out from the crowd. The PaintShop image-editing program by Corel has the tools you need to produce this colorful black and white effect.

Instructions

      Open PaintShop. Click "File" and then click "Open" to bring up a file selection window. This window contains your files.

      Double-click one of the image files to display it in the PaintShop editing window. Choose a color image.

      Move your mouse to the toolbar on the left side of the PaintShop user interface. This toolbar contain a list of tools arranged vertically. These tools have icons but no names.

      Move your mouse over the toolbars. As you do, tooltips will describe the name of the tool. Locate the "Selection" tool and click the arrow next to that tool. A menu will appear. Click "Freehand Selection" from that menu. This will activate that tool.

      Locate the object on the image you want to keep in color.

      Click a point near that object and hold down your left mouse button.

      Drag your mouse to trace an outline around that object. Release the mouse button when you finish. This will select that object.

      Click "Selections," and then click "Invert." PaintShop will invert the selection and select everything except that object.

      Click "Effects" to open a drop-down menu. Move the cursor over "Phtoto Effects" and click "Black and White Film." PaintShop will convert the selected area to black and white. The object that you traced will remain in color.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may have to experiment when tracing part of the image using the computer mouse. After applying the "Black and White Film" filter, press "Ctrl+Z" to undo your change if you wish to try again. PaintShop will undo the effect.
