How to Detect UV Light

How to Detect UV Light thumbnail
UV light is invisible to the human eye, so you need a device to detect it.

Ultraviolet rays are electromagnetic rays with a wavelength that puts them between visible violet light and X-rays. They can be dangerous to humans, particularly your eyes and skin, if you are exposed to them for long periods of time. Fortunately there are a number of products on the market that will detect UV rays and alert you to their presence so that you can prepare and protect yourself properly.

    • 1

Learn where you can find UV light normally. For instance, UV rays are present in natural sunlight, but they also come from black lights and are emitted from UV tools that are used to detect bodily fluids.

    • 2

Purchase a simple UV detection device. There are meters and gauges that will tell you how strong the UV light is in a certain area, but that are simple detection devices available such as bracelets or frisbees that turn color in the presence of UV light.

Expose your device to a light source. If it reacts, then there is UV light present and you should take all necessary precautions such as putting on sun tan lotion, wearing sunglasses and monitoring how long you are exposed.
