How to Make Children's Soft Books

A sewing machine will speed up the process, but you may also sew the project by hand.

Soft books make beautiful first books for children. Carefully selecting materials for child safety ensures that homemade soft books are safe for children. Soft books are durable and can withstand children putting them in their mouths. They even make beautiful gifts to bring to any baby shower.

Things You'll Need

• Fabric with the story printed on it
• Thread
• Batting
• Iron
• Pins

Instructions

1. Purchase fabric with story printed on it. The printed fabrics can be found at fabric stores and the fabric departments of retail stores. You do not need to go to any specialty stores to find these, although specialty stores carry this fabric as well.

2. Cut out the book pages. Cut just inside the black line so no black will show when you sew the pages.

3. Iron all the pages.

4. Cut the batting to fit each of the pages. The cover is slightly larger than the other pages.

5. Lay the batting for the cover down and place the cover on top of the batting, face up.

6. Lay the 1/10 page over the cover face down. Pin this in place

7. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the rest of the pages, pinning each set into place. Page 9/2 should be pinned to 3/8, and page 7/4 will be pinned to 5/6.

8. Begin sewing each page set. Leave 2 to 3 inches open at the bottom of each page so that you can turn them right-side out when you have finished sewing them.

9. Sew the gaps you left.

10. Iron the pages again.

11. Sew the spine of the book. You may consider doing this by hand as it could be damaging to your sewing machine.

12. Add ribbon to the spine to cover the stitch using fabric glue.
