How to Stiffen Ribbon for Hair Bows

Even satin ribbon can be harden to create the perfect hair bow.

Stiffened, wired ribbons are perfect bows for gift wrapping or decorations, but they shouldn't be used as hair bows. If the wire becomes exposed, it can poke or scratch you. But, there is a way to make satin ribbon and other soft fabrics stiff enough to use as hair bows.

Things You'll Need

• Ribbon
• Fabric stiffening spray
• Hair dryer

Instructions

1. Make a bow with your ribbon. Tie the bow around a hair tie so it's ready for use when it's dry.

2. Spray the entire bow with fabric stiffening spray. You want to evenly coat the bow without over-saturating it.

3. Plug in your hair dryer, and turn it on "Low" heat.

4. Dry the ribbon using the hair dryer. After 30 seconds of drying, re-shape the bow as necessary before it completely dries.

5. Continue to dry the bow with the hair dryer for another 1 to 2 minutes.

Tips & Warnings

• If you mess up or you need to use the ribbon for another project, simply wash the ribbon to remove the stiffening spray.
