How to Clean a Hoover Brush Roller in an Upright Vacuum

Hoover upright vacuums have a main nozzle under the cleaner that contains a rolling brush that dislodges and suctions up particles and debris up from the floor surfaces it is cleaning. As the brush rolls within the nozzle it can quickly accumulate debris on it, such as carpet threads, hair and other particles -- some of these twist around the brush bar and become trapped in its bristles. A dirty brush roller can block suction to the vacuum, so it is important to check and clean the brush regularly to maintain vacuum performance.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver set
• Knife (optional)
• Scissors (optional)
• Separate vacuum (optional)
• Lint-free microfiber cloth (optional)
• Mild detergent (optional)

Instructions

1. Turn off your Hoover upright vacuum and unplug it from the electrical socket.

2. Lay the vacuum on the floor so that you can see the base plate and brush roller underneath the cleaner.

3. Unscrew the plate from the cleaner. Set it aside.

4. Pull debris from around the brush roller by hand. If necessary, cut it away with a knife or scissors. If you own a separate vacuum, vacuum the debris from the cavity.

5. Wipe the roller and cavity interior with a damp cloth if you accidentally vacuum up sticky or smelly materials. If necessary, unhook one side of the roller, grasp the belt with one hand and slide the roller out from the belt, and then lift the roller from the cavity to wash it separately. Wash it with mild detergent in hot water, set it aside to air-dry and then return it to the cavity after it dries.

6. Reattach the base plate onto the vacuum when you're finished cleaning. Plug in and turn on the vacuum or store it.

Tips & Warnings

• Never use a soaking wet cloth to wipe the brush roll or cavity as water that seeps into the vacuum may damage it.

• Always take care when using a knife or scissors around the brush roll as you can accidentally cut the roller belt.
