1
Attach the furring strips or the rigid foam board over the cedar shakes with the galvanized nails, or foam board fasteners. Foam board fasteners are nails with a small disc attached at the head to keep them from sinking down through the foam board when nailed in place. Either method can be used depending on the need for added insulation. Check continually for level as you add the foam board or strips to so you are installing a flat surface to attach the siding to.

2
Find the lowest point of the exterior with the level, and mark this as your starting point with a pencil. Use the manufacturer's instructions to determine how far above the low point to place the starting strip. Measure that distance with a tape measure, and snap a chalk line around the entire exterior to give yourself a level beginning line.

3
Install the starter strip on your chalk line.

4
Install the inside and outside corner pieces. Center the nails in the pre-cut nail slots and do not countersink them; allow for some expansion of the vinyl when heated. Nail in the window and door trim J-channels. This is what holds the siding sections in place at the ends along any openings.
-
5
Attach the first course of vinyl siding panels by fitting the bottom edge into the starter strip. Continue adding siding in courses, overlapping seams where pieces butt together by 1 inch, staggering the seams so they are no closer than 4 feet apart.
-
6
Install siding around windows and doors by cutting the panels down and notching the cut ends with the snap lock tool to snap properly in the channels at the window trim.
-
7
Install soffit trim utility strips when you are within 1 foot of completing the siding at the top of the wall. After you have nailed the second-to-last row in place, measure the width needed for the last piece. Use the utility knife to score the siding sideways and snap it along this line to reduce the size. Use the snap lock tool to punch lugs into the panel 1/2 inch from the top. Slide the last piece into place and snap into position on the utility strip.
