How to Make a Superstar Costume

Sunglasses are a must for any superstar costume

Onstage or off, superstars are glitzy, glamorous, and over the top in their dress and appearance. In his heyday, you knew that Elton John was a superstar because no one else dressed in that many sequins and odd-shaped glasses in public. Superstar Cher manages a superstar appearance no matter where she is or what she is doing. With these stars as inspiration, you can create a costume that proclaims to the world that you are a superstar, too.

• Colored hair spray or wig
• Fake jewelry

• Toy dog (optional)

Instructions

1. Wear clothes that "scream." Superstars do not wear normal clothes like plain jeans and baggy t-shirts in public. Women -- find the shortest, most sparkly dress you can. Or find jeans covered with rhinestone bling and a matching top. Wear sparkly high heels, no matter what you wear on top. Men -- wear a bright satin shirt with tight black pants, or even vinyl or faux-leather jeans are even better. Fashon-forward black boots, or canvas sneakers covered with rhinestones, will complement your superstar look.

2. Apply makeup with a heavy hand; more is better. This applies to women especially (but not exclusively). Use more obvious rouge and lipstick colors than you normally would. Apply eye shadow as heavily as you would cake frosting. For the male superstar-to-be, a little eyeliner will enhance your larger-than-life look.

3. Wear a lavish wig or style your hair wildly. A metallic silver or gold wig will complement any woman's superstar outfit, just as it does for CHer. A fake rainbow-striped mohawk or even multi-colored spikes created with tinted hair spray will turn any man into a superstar.

4. Find outrageous sunglasses, the more outrageous the better. Find star-shaped lenses as Elton John used to wear, and look for yellow, red or orange lenses. Whatever sunglasses you select, never take them off. (You never know when a paparazzi will take a flash photo.)

5. Add accessories. For the female superstar, a purse dog is a must-have accessory. Find a large purse with plenty of glitter and bling to match your outfit and add a stuffed pooch to complete the look. Superstars of either gender should have a cell phone in their hand at all times, whether they use the phones or not. Talk your friends into dressing up in business attire so they can be your entourage. Honor Michael Jackson by carrying around a large stuffed chimpanzee.
