How to Look for Roofing Jobs

Roofing is a more stable building trade than many others in the construction and remodeling industry because much of the work of roofers is repairing and replacing existing roofs, not in new construction. Roofing jobs are expected to grow by about 4 percent between 2008 and 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition. The job has a high turnover rate, and jobs come more easily during the spring and summer.

Instructions

    • 1

Look in your newspaper classifieds (and the online edition) for roofing positions.

    • 2

Visit a couple of websites (see Resources) to find a directory of local roofing companies. Ask the companies if they are hiring roofers. To help you fill out job applications, bring a copy of your resume, as well as photo identification, Social Security card and reference information.

    • 3

Call or visit local building contractors. Ask if they know of roofing companies who are hiring. Building contractors have their finger on the pulse of the local construction world. They hear of jobs in the various building trades before the jobs are more widely advertised.

    • 4

Perform a high-quality, professional job for each customer if you work for yourself. Word of mouth can help you build your roofing business' reputation, bringing in more jobs with each job you successfully complete.
