How to Secure Cornrows
Cornrows are hair tightly braided to the scalp in linear or complex geometric patterns. According to "The History of Cornrow Braiding" as reported by the Dr, Ron Eglash and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, cornrows appear earliest in African culture, but examples of these tight braids can be found in Celtic and Asian cultures as well. In early African culture, intricate cornrows were a sign that a woman was valued and well cared-for since some designs could take up to eight hours to achieve. To create tight secure cornrows, a stylist must work carefully and apply a few braiding tricks. Does this Spark an idea?

Three Tips for Tight and Secure Cornrows
-
1
Dampen hair but do not soak it. Before braiding hair into cornrows, lightly spritz the hair with water or water mixed with detangler. This will make the hair easier to manage. In addition, wet hair expands as it dries, making the braids tighter without you having to pull on the hair.

2
Apply a small amount of styling gel or hair wax to small sections of the braid as you work. Rub one fingertip in styling wax or put a small drop of gel on your finger tip and smooth it over the cornrow to keep the braids neat and secure.

3
Secure the ends of the cornrow with hairclips, end bars, bolo tips or rubber bands. Only use rubber bands designed for use with hair. Office brand rubber bands will break or rot hair.
