How to Find the ECU in a 2001 Ford Windstar

The engine control unit (ECU) in a 2001 Ford Windstar is the main computer responsible for controlling the engine's electronic functions, such as the fuel injection and the ignition timing. The ECU actively collects data from a number of sensors throughout the vehicle to manage the engine. When the ECU fails, a number of drivability symptoms can occur, such as erratic engine performance or a no start condition. Replacement ECUs are available from Ford dealerships and automotive salvage yards.

Things You'll Need

• Flat head screwdriver
• Flashlight

Instructions

1. Shift the transmission into park and shut off the engine. Set the parking brake and open the hood.

2. Remove the plastic pushpins from the vent shroud between the hood and the windshield with a flat head screwdriver. Remove the vent shroud from the vehicle and set the pushpins aside.

3. Shine a flashlight into the cavity between the windshield and the hood on the passenger's side near the fender, approximately 5 inches to the left of the passenger's side windshield wiper.

4. Look directly down where the light is shining. The ECM is square, made from aluminum and is bolted to the firewall.
