How to Compare PEX Piping to PVC
PEX and PVC piping are types of plastic piping. PEX is made of crosslinking polyethylene molecules. It is flexible plastic and does not corrode and is resistant to chlorine. PVC pipes are made of poly vinyl chloride and are useful in many applications. When comparing the types of piping, think about how the pipes will be used, what is flowing through the pipes and the costs associated with each. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Determine where the piping goes. PVC pipes are rigid, and if there are many twists and turns then PEX piping will be able to handle this with much less fittings. PEX can easily turn a 90-degree corner without an elbow fitting.
-
2
Investigate the temperatures in your area. PVC piping will crack and become damaged under freezing or cold conditions. If you live in a warm climate then PVC piping will work fine, but for those in cold climates, PEX is best.

3
Determine the size of the piping that is needed. Common PEX sizes are 3/8, 5/8, 1, 1/2 and 3/4 inches. PVC is found in all differnet types of sizes and is typically used for larger pipes. The outside diamter of a PVC pipe can be as much as 400 mm.
-
4
Invetsigate the type of existing piping you will be connecting the new piping to. PEX and PVC fittings are similar, and PVC can easily be connected to PVC and other types of plastic pipes.
-
5
Think about cost and the budget you have in place for the pipes. PEX is less expensive as it does not have to be precut. PEX is shipped on a spool, and you cut it to length as you go about your pumping project. PVC pipes are cut to specific lengths and require special pipe saws if additional cutting is required. Factor these issues into the cost of the project.
-
6
Calculate how much tensile force or axial compression will be placed on the piping. PVC pipes are much stronger than PEX pipes and are typically used in sewer systems and many water systems. Additionally PVC is stable and resistant to alkalis, oils, acids and oxidizing agents. Think about what will be running through the pipes before choosing PVC or PEX.
