Silk flowers in a variety of fall colors look real and vibrant.

Choosing the right fall colors is key to creating a beautiful silk centerpiece for autumn. Red, gold, orange and deep green can transform a room from the last vestiges of summer to fall. Follow some easy guidelines, then let your imagination soar as you bring a little of the autumn season into your home.

Place plastic or newspaper on a flat surface that will give you space to work on your arrangement. Lay the silk flowers and silk ferns on the work surface. Use a pair of scissors to cut the store tags off the stems. Set a wide mouth vase at least 10" tall and solid in color in the center of the work area.

Arrange three large ferns on the work table, then stack five different sizes and (autumn) colors of silk flowers on top of the ferns. Allow the ferns to be 3 inches higher than the flowers. Stack another layer of five flowers, then lay three large ferns over the top of those silk flowers. Make the ferns 3 inches higher than the flowers, as you did with the first ferns you placed.

Bend the bottom stem wires until all the plants are equal in length on the bottom. Wrap the 8-inch coated wire around the arrangement 3 inches from the bottom and twist to hold in place. Make certain the circumference of the stems doesn't exceed the mouth of the vase. Remember to leave the flowers and ferns at the varied lengths on top, just the bottom stems should be the same. Set the arrangement to the side.

Place floral arrangement putty on the bottom of the vase. Push the putty down to anchor in place, using a wooden spoon. Pick up the arrangement of flowers and set them inside the vase without pressing the wire stems into the putty. The silk flowers will be in the center and the ferns will be along the rim of the vase. Curl the ferns down and fluff out the silk flowers to give them more fullness. Follow the picture for the overall effect. Finish by pressing the arrangement into the putty to keep the flowers and ferns in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take out a flower if the arrangement circumference is too large for the mouth of the vase. Vary the autumn colors from light to dark for a realistic arrangement.
