How to Clean a Dryer Lint Catcher

Dirty lint catchers can prevent laundry from drying properly.

Clothes dryers are equipped with lint catchers that filter lint buildup from laundry and fabric softener sheets. Dirty lint filters obstruct proper airflow and cause heat to accumulate within dryers, and excessive heat buildup can cause dryers to catch fire. Regularly cleaning a dryer lint catcher is essential to the dryer's safety and efficiency. Clean a dryer lint catcher using basic supplies and techniques.

Things You'll Need

• Comb
• Plastic container
• 2 tbsp. liquid dishwashing detergent
• Nylon scrub brush

Instructions

1. Unplug the appliance from the electrical outlet. Allow it to cool completely.

2. Pull out the lint catcher from the machine's interior compartment.

3. Scrape off any existing lint from the lint catcher using a comb.

4. Fill a plastic container with a solution of 2 tbsp. liquid dishwashing detergent and 1 gallon warm water. Thoroughly mix the solution to dissolve the detergent.

5. Submerge the lint catcher in the soapy solution. Scrub each side of the lint catcher with a nylon scrub brush to remove all buildup from the mesh.

6. Rinse the lint catcher with warm water to wash out the detergent solution.

7. Allow the lint catcher to air dry completely before replacing it in the machine.
