Instructions

    • 1

Select the photos you want to use. They can have a common theme, such as pictures from a family vacation to the beach, or include random family photos that you like. Choose pictures that don't have too much going on in them. It's generally better to use all color photographs or all black-and-white pictures, although you can mix the two in an eclectic room.

    • 2

Unify the pictures by using the same color mat for each. Choose the same frames or mix up different types of frames if it works in the room. Some arrangements, such as a grid, work best with the same simple frames for each picture.

    • 3

Make a template for each picture you want to hang. Trace the frame on brown paper, such as flat paper bags or brown butcher or craft paper. Cut out the size and shape of each frame.

    • 4

Arrange the brown templates on the floor in front of the wall the pictures will hang on, if possible. Otherwise, use the floor of a nearby room. Anchor the arrangement by placing the largest picture on the bottom or on one side. The edges can all be straight across the bottom, top, left or right side, or create an even balance in the center of the arrangement.

    • 5

Transfer the templates to the wall in the same arrangement you had on the floor. Use a measuring tape to ensure the correct spacing between the pictures. Use tape to make the templates stick to the wall.

    • 6

Leave the templates on the wall for a few days so you can get used to the arrangement and make sure you like it. Make any adjustments you deem necessary using the templates, as it's easier to move the paper around than the pictures.

    • 7

Hang the pictures on the walls using the appropriate method for the size, weight and type of walls you have. Picture nails, screws, hooks and adhesives are common picture-hanging methods. Use a level to make sure the pictures are straight.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use hanging frames that hang on a bar if you want to update the pictures frequently. Alternatively, clip the pictures to a wire or bar so you can update them as often as you please without hassle.
