Homemade Dust Mite Spray

Dust mites are tiny, microscopic bugs that may cause allergic or asthmatic reactions in some people. They are commonly found in furniture, mattresses, carpet or other areas of frequent human use. Dust mites live off of human skin cells or dander, and leave feces behind that contain a protein that may cause a reaction in some people. While dust mite sprays are available in many stores, it is possible to create a homemade dust mite spray as well, using a few items that are commonly found in many kitchens or can be purchased at the store.

Things You'll Need

• Tannic acid powder
• Spray bottle

Instructions

1. Combine 3-percent tannic acid with 2 cups warm water in a spray bottle. Tannic acid powder can be purchased at many health food stores, pet stores, hardware stores or some grocery stores.

2. Mix the spray well.

3. Spray the mixture over carpet, furniture and bare mattresses and allow it to dry completely before covering with sheets or other fabric items.

4. Repeat weekly.

Tips & Warnings

• Wash sheets, pillowcases and other fabric items in very hot water to help remove and prevent dust mites. Consider placing a plastic cover over the mattress once dust mites have been removed, as well as plastic covers for pillowcases. Vacuum infected carpets frequently.
