You can return gifts to Target, but under certain conditions.

Holidays, birthdays and special occasions are often celebrated through gift-giving. Unfortunately, there are occasions when a gift, however well intentioned, does not match the receiver's interest. In those cases, it is economical to return the gift for something more suitable. This process can often be daunting, with long lines and specific return policies. Returning items at Target does not have to be exhausting if you follow its policy. Whether you are returning in-store or online, the process is simple if you follow a few basic steps.

Instructions

  1. Target In-Store Returns

    • 1

Find the receipt. With no receipt, Target will not allow you to return the item. However, if the gift-giver is willing, the item may be looked up by the credit card used to purchase the item.

    • 2

Ensure that you have all of the item's packaging and accessories before going to the store. Target states that this is necessary to return any items.

    • 3

Bring your gift receipt with the item to the guest services area. Target states that you will have 90 days to return an item from the time it was purchased. Certain electronic items, such as video games or CDs, cannot be returned if opened and may only be exchanged. Target states that holiday and clearance items are refunded at the current clearance price.

    • 4

Obtain the refund in the form of a gift card. According to Target, all gift recipients who return an item will be issued a gift card for the amount of the item.

    • 5

Return an item from the gift registry. The process is easier, especially if the item was registered on your gift registry. Target states that you must simply bring the gift receipt to the guest services area. If you do not have the receipt, you may print out the "Gift Purchase Log," which may be used in lieu of the gift receipt.
