How to Add Rhinestones to Crafts

How to Add Rhinestones to Crafts thumbnail
Try using rhinestones of different shapes, color and sizes.

Rhinestones can turn a plain project into a glitzy craft. Consider rhinestones the perfect addition to scrapbooks, pictures frames, greeting cards and even clothing. Since rhinestones tend to stand out, you want to make sure yours are applied properly so that they don't damage your craft or fall off. Although applying rhinestones is relatively simple, it does require attention to detail for a polished end product. If you take your time and use the proper equipment, you'll have the perfect embellishments for all of your craft projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Test your gem glue at least 24 hours before use to ensure that it will not have a negative impact on your craft. If you plan on attaching rhinestones to your jeans, for example, test the glue on a small square of fabric. Place one single rhinestone onto the glue to ensure that it will hold properly.

    • 2

Lay your craft project down flat onto a work surface. Use a clean, dry rag to wipe any dust or debris off of the item.

    • 3

Squeeze small spots of glue in your desired pattern onto the craft. Although it seems obvious, remember to use an appropriate amount of glue depending on the size of the rhinestone. For very large stones, apply enough glue so that a little bit extra bubbles up around the edges of the stone. Only apply as many glue spots as you can attach rhinestones to in less than 60 seconds.

    • 4

Lightly press the stones into the drops of glue. The glue will be white when it is wet when but should turn clear as it dries. If you must move the craft, allow the glue to turn clear so that the stones do not fall off.

    • 5

Allow the glue to dry for a full 24 hours before you try to move your craft. If you have attached the rhinestones to clothing, do not try to wash the garment for at least one week after application.
