Planting Instructions for 7 Foot Tall Arborvitae Trees in Burlap From the Nursery

They are also a popular choice for Christmas trees. The trees often sell at the nursery in burlap bags for planting. If you use them as Christmas trees, plant them outdoors as soon as possible to prevent them dying. They will only survive for a limited amount of time while in burlap. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Keep the root ball moist until you are ready to plant the tree. You should place it in water because it will get too wet. Apply 2 to 3 inches of water to the root ball and allow it to dry before watering it again.
-
2
Dig a hole that is 2 inches wider and 2 inches deeper than the burlap root ball. A 7-foot tall tree will need support after being planted in a small hole.
-
-
3
Place the tree into the hole. Try to cut off as much of the burlap bag as you can to expose the root system. It is OK to leave some of the bag on the bottom if you can not reach it.
-
4
Add 1 to 2 inches of organic compost in with the native soil before you begin re-filling the hole. Leave 1 to 2 inches of the root ball above the ground when you begin refilling the hole.
-
5
Stake the tree by tying a length of cotton rope, the same length as the height of the tree, to a metal stake. You will need 3 pieces of rope and 3 stakes for one 7-foot tall tree. Tie the cotton rope to the tree about half way up the tree. Pull the rope tight and drive the stake into the ground.
-
6
Repeat for the other lengths of rope. The stakes should be at equal distance around the perimeter of the tree. This will prevent wind damage.
-
7
Water the tree with 2 to 3 inches of water. Allow the soil to dry our before adding more water. There will be no need to fertilize the tree until after it has been established. Add 2 to 3 inches of aged manure to the top of the soil in the spring.
